Russia obliges all automobiles to carry ERA-GLONASS system

MOSCOW, Jan 9 (PRIME) -- The requirement to equip all passenger and freight transport vehicles, launched in Russia for the first time, with emergency response system ERA-GLONASS, or its analogues for the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) members, came into force on January 1, the Transport Ministry said in a statement.

“The absolute core objective of implementation of ERA-GLONASS is to reduce the road traffic death rate: the measure will save 4,000 lives per year in Russia alone. The ERA-GLONASS system has already received over 108,000 calls from January 1 until now,” the ministry said.

As of December 20, 2016, all mass-market car brands, like Lada, Hyundai, KIA, Renault, and Volkswagen, and premium names, like BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Bentley, and Rolls Royce, which supply products to the EAEU, have equipped their vehicles with the system or in the process of doing so. The EAEU comprises Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia.

The ground-based ERA-GLONASS navigation information infrastructure is built to serve all roads in the country, and vehicles equipped with GLONASS/GPS navigation communication terminals. The system cuts the time of emergency services’ coming to emergency scenes by 30% on average, as its Web site read.
